Why Drama?

Lawnswood School provides a rounded and balanced diet of learning in line with the National Curriculum, alongside this we encourage and nurture creativity, advocate reading for pleasure and use extracurricular activities to expand the skills, knowledge and enjoyment of education. This diet includes the robust and exciting delivery of the Performing Arts. Pupils are encouraged to engage in further learning and development in this area to support the skills needed to succeed in life and an ever more competitive job market.

“The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.”

(DfE.gov 2014)

The aims of the drama department at Key Stage Three are to support the English Curriculum in the delivery of reading, writing and speaking skills. We also endeavour to promote a world view using drama as a tool to explore our social, political and religious surroundings and unpack problems and issues in a safe space. Using stories from other cultures, drawing on the expertise of past practitioners and looking at contemporary theatre to develop an understanding of the world around us, we endeavour to educate all children and allow them to develop opinions, balanced views on critical issues and a deeper understanding of social change and give them a platform to discuss, perform and share their findings.

Pupils begin by learning the basics of characterisation and acting through the theories of Russian practitioner Constantin Stanislavski. They move quickly into developing their own scripts and devised physical theatre based on Classical Greek Mythology and Greek Theatre.

Opportunities for mask making, set design, script writing, prop making, singing, dancing, acting and reading are all part of the taught curriculum. Extra-curricular Drama is at the heart of the school and the Big Lawnswood Theatre The West Yorkshire Playhouse Co.(BLT for short) has had a run of successes including Grease, The Wizard of Oz, Raising the Game – performed at The West Yorkshire Playhouse and many more to come!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Drama provision at Lawnswood School.
