Daniel Griffin, Year 11
My name is Dan, and I’m in year 11 at Lawnswood School. In my time at Lawnswood I have enjoyed every minute, the school has helped me and encouraged me to take every opportunity.
I am looking forward to completing year 11 and progressing on into further education, hopefully at Lawnswood.
My main passion outside of the classroom is aviation. I am currently studying for the Private Pilot’s License at my local aero club. To qualify for the license I need to do 45 hours of flying, of which a minimum of 10 of the 45 have to be solo, I am hoping to complete my first solo flight in the very near future. Also, I must take nine theory exams and do a “General Skills Test” with an examiner, (The flying equivalent of a driving test). I hope to take the test on my 17th birthday in October 2016.
Flying is something that not many do, which makes me really appreciate how lucky I am to be able to do it. It has been my main interest from a very young age and as soon as it was practical for me to start my flying training, I did! In the future, hopefully this will benefit me when I apply to join the RAF as a pilot.
The place where I fly is Sherburn Aero Club. We have 3 grass and one tarmac runway, along with a clubhouse. All of the instructors and pilots get on really well and we all usually have a chat and some refreshments after flying throughout the day. It’s a really nice to talk to pilots and students, with varying amounts of experience, some instructors are even captains with commercial airlines for their days jobs, then they teach people like me on weekends.
I am also an NCO (Non Commissioned Officer), with the rank of Sergeant at my local Air Training Corps squadron. We are also known as the RAF Air Cadets. I love the ATC, and I have been able to undertake shooting, more flying, D of E, Expedition training and I have also lived on RAF stations for short periods of time during the summer. The ATC is a great organisation and I’m proud to be a part of it.
