It appears that summer is well and truly with us and we hope the weather holds for our Lawnswood School Community picnic this afternoon. Please do join us between 3.30pm and 6.30pm at Lawnswood School – all are welcome.
As we move into the last month of school life, there is no slowing down for our staff or students. Most Year groups now have their end of year exams behind them and we will be sharing the progress made this year, by your child, in their end of year report. Whilst it is a busy time for all our students, Year 10 are now really starting to step up a gear and take on the role of the leaders of the main school. They have a full week of exams next week and this is followed swiftly by a series of careers interviews. Please take time to encourage them to start thinking seriously about life after Year 11, many of them will already have a clear goal in mind but often students need a lot of support and guidance to help them feel confident about this next stage of their life.
Year 6 into 7 transition
As well as focusing on the rest of the summer term, we also look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students into the school over the next few weeks. Our induction activities are designed to prepare them for their start at Lawnswood School in September; we are particularly looking forward to meeting them all during the Induction days on 4 and 5 July. If you have a son or daughter joining us next year, please make sure that you have also made an appointment to bring them into school for an informal meeting with one of our staff. We hope to be able to get to know them a little better before they join us and to take the opportunity to address any questions that they may have. The appointments can be accessed by clicking on the Parents Evening tab on our website.
Sixth Form updates
We are immensely proud of our Sixth Form and rightly so. Our Year 13 students achieved the best results in Leeds last year and were among the top 20% of schools in the country; recent research shows that our maths results were 11th in the country too. In addition to the excellent examination results our students leave us well prepared for their future.
Our current Year 12 students are involved in our Focus on your Future Fortnight, which sees them visiting Universities, exploring apprenticeships, learning how to write their UCAS application and also engaging in a full week of work experience. We hope that they find these activities really help them to prepare and plan for their final Year in Secondary School and the extremely exciting opportunities available to them once they leave us.
We also look forward to welcoming our new Year 12 in September and their induction day is on Thursday 12 July 2018. In order to ensure we are fully prepared to welcome our new Year 12 students, if your child is intending to join us, can you inform Mr Walker, via email (email@example.com), to confirm his/her attendance at the event. The day will include a range of activities and will support your child in making an informed decision regarding their post 16 option choice.
It was wonderful to share an evening of celebration this week at our annual Prize Giving ceremony. Over 80 students won awards and we were joined by Anne Bunn, an ex-student of the school, who shared her memories of attending the school in the late 1960s. It was fascinating to hear how the uniform was not to their taste even then and also about their learning experience.
Friends of Lawnswood Art and Design Exhibition
You are warmly invited to the 9th Art & Design Exhibition on Thursday 5th July 2018 from 6- 8pm. The exhibition will showcase the very best of Lawnswood talent in paintings, drawings, textiles & fashion, 3D and multimedia.
Friends of Lawnswood have worked with the art department to inspire students by exhibiting their work to a professional standard, mimicking an exhibition ‘opening’, with music, refreshments and artwork descriptions. Some of the exhibits will take you on the artist’s journey from first inspiration and conception, to, development and final output. The standard of work continues to be exceptional and as in previous years there will be the opportunity to commission and purchase particular pieces. This is a free event open to the Lawnswood families and the general public. We will ask you to vote for your favourite artist with prizes provided by Friends of Lawnswood School. Please join us for what promises to be an inspirational and celebratory event.
As you will know, we are dedicated to improving our students’ literacy to enable them to have the best chance of success in life. Our literacy strategy is reliant on us having a wide range of books that will interest teenagers. Mrs South, our Librarian, keeps abreast of latest releases and keeps our library well stocked. However, we are aware that as parents/carers, you may well have bought your children books that they have read and enjoyed, but have now outgrown. If this is the case, then we would give those much loved books a good home! If you do have books that you would like to donate to the school, please either send them in with your child to leave with our librarian or bring them into main reception.
Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students will have the opportunity to show us and you their reading skills in the latest round of reading tests, which will be taken during their English lessons next week. The results of these will be shared on their reports and are also used for us to identify any students who may need additional support with their reading progress. Please do take some time to discuss these tests with your child, your interest and support will make a difference to them.
As it comes to an end of the academic year, I am sure that some of you have children who have outgrown items of uniform. As you will appreciate, we like to keep spare uniform at school for students who forget their uniform and for students who are new to the school and often the country. If you do have any spare uniform that you could donate to us, we would be pleased to receive it.
Similarly, if you have any GCSE or A-level revision guides that are no longer needed, we would be able to put them to very good use.
